Chapter 17

Fin

M om stiffed at my words, but I continued on in a hurry, “Avery said something, something that makes me think things are going to get really bad tomorrow. We have to get out of here before that. I have a plan, you just have to trust me, ok? I love you.”

I released her and finished eating like nothing had happened. I mentally went over my possibly (completely) insane plan over and over and just prayed to whoever might be listening that no telepaths were as well. After a while, Avery returned and decreed dinner time officially over, so we stood and walked towards the doors. I clenched my hands at my sides to try to distract myself from the pain that was about to shoot through me, willing myself to show no other outwards signs. I reached out with my telekinesis and stopped one of the guard’s hearts. He clutched his chest and went down. The other four jumped into action.

“I think he’s having a heart attack!”

Avery looked at me with narrowed eyes, but the only thing he saw on my face was concern – and it wasn’t fake. I was concerned for the guy. I didn’t want him to die. He had actually seemed fairly decent all the times he’d escorted me around, even made small talk here and there. Avery grabbed my arm and yanked me away from mom, another guard grabbing her. “Call the medical team,” he barked.

One of the guard’s started doing chest compressions. “Sir, I don’t think we have time.”

I turned to Avery, pleading in my eyes – again, completely real. I needed him to believe me, I needed him to do this. “Turn off my cuff. Let me help him. You know I can do it.”

He raised an eyebrow at me. “So you can attack everyone? How stupid do you think I am?” he scoffed.

“I haven’t attacked anyone and I won’t, you know that. I won’t let you hurt my mom, so as much as I hate it, I'm your compliant little show poodle. Just let me save this guy. Please.” He studied me for what felt like an eternity and nodded. He kept a firm grip on my arm and motioned to a guard to grab my other one. Well, shit. That put a little wrench in my plan. I had never teleported four people before, and definitely hadn’t tried to do some while touching and some while not all on the same trip. I had to make a choice, and I had to do it now. I took a deep breath. My choice had been made before I even formed the question in my head. I was getting mom out of here. She would be safe and they would no longer have anything to force me to cooperate.

The guard stopped holding mom and shoved her slightly behind him, away from the scene. He wasn't paying much attention to her, focusing on his colleague – maybe even friend – potentially dying on the ground.
